The Glitter Merchants at the Gemological Institute of America

"The Glitter Merchants" is a photography exhibit being shown at the GIA Museum Gallery in Carlsbad California through May 2002.

This is a black and white photo-journalistic essay by New York-based photographer Greg Kinch featuring diamond cutters and dealers in Antwerp, Belgium and New York. Kinch has been quoted as saying, "People love this story. We've all seen diamonds in the jewelry case, but how did they get there? It's a fascinating journey."

Greg Kinch gained access to the world of diamonds for a 1998 enRoute magazine shoot. He is represented in New York by Marlaina Gayle of MGRepresents. The photographs can also be seen on-line at www.kinch.com/

The Israel Diamond Exchange - Kiryat Moshe Schnitzer

The Israel Diamond Exchange complex, the largest of its kind in the world, was named in honor of Moshe Schnitzer as a tribute to his lifelong contribution to the development of Israel's $14 billion diamond industry.

Considered to be "the driving force" behind the establishment of the Diamond Exchange complex, Schnitzer is credited with having the vision of establishing the complex, by first constructing a building with all the facilities to facilitate business and trade in the 1960s. Today, most of us take it for granted, but, then, it was truly revolutionary for Israel.

Then the diamond factories were located in Nethanya, Petach Tikvah, Tel Aviv, Ramat Gan, Jerusalem, and other cities around the country, but most of the offices were in Tel Aviv in the financial district on Ahad Ha'am St., so the first choice was to stay in Tel Aviv; but, the mayor of Ramat Gan, Avraham Krinitzi, offered very attractive terms to the fledgling industry.

The complex, in 2002, comprises 4 buildings interconnected by a set of internal bridges - with more than 1000 offices. There's even an external bridge connecting directly from the train station to the complex.

Diamond Exchange Can you just imagine having all of your competitors in one set of buildings - rough dealers, polished manufacturers, traders; all your suppliers in the same complex; the export office; the office of the Ministry of Industry and Trade; the shipping companies; 4 banks; 2 post offices - 1 for mail and 1 for diamond shipments; 2 trading halls - 1 for rough and 1 for polished; restaurants; travel agencies; gemological labs - all under the auspices of the Diamond Exchange?

Guests at the ceremonies included members of the Diamond Exchange, friends, family and dignitaries including the former Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu; Israel's Chief Rabbi Lau; the Mayor of Ramat Gan, Zvi Bar; the DTC Director of Sales, Ian White; and World Diamond Council Chairman Eli Izakhoff.

Moshe Schnitzer said that throughout his career he was motivated by a desire to contribute to the industry and to the country. He admitted that he had always been an unrelenting optimist. He said, "The most important message I can bring to you is my motto: Without hope there is no future."

The Black Diamond

I've discovered this great book - about a "mysterious" stone - the "black" diamond - a diamond that absorbs the light rather than reflecting it. The author, Fawaz Gruosi, is a jeweller who uses these gems under his brand name de Grisogono.

A magnificent artbook superbly illustrated with some of the most beautiful de Grisogono jewels, "The Black Diamond" is a reference book asking and answering some of the following questions about the true nature of a black diamond, its color, why this gem has been previously been forgotten, and the reasons behind its new popularity.

The Clean Diamond Trade Act

The Clean Diamond Trade Act, passed in November 2001 by the House of Representatives, seems to be stalled in the Senate, therefore pressure is being applied.

During the recent Senate hearings, however, the United States Justice Department's antitrust considerations concerning DeBeers were linked in an interesting way with the pending legislation.

In an article (February 15, 2002) about the conflict diamond legislation, a Washington correspondent for Business Day, www.bday.co.za, reported that two members of the House of Representatives, Tony Hall and Frank Wolf, told a senate hearing that "pursuing court action seems in diametric opposition to diplomatic work on conflict diamonds, because De Beers plays an enormous role in the diamond trade."

De Beers is considered to be the "driving force" behind the Kimberley Process, the forum which is developing an international certification system for rough diamonds.

The Director of Corporate Affairs for De Beers, Rory More O'Ferral, is said to have reacted "cautiously" to the statement, saying, "The two things are totally separate." Referring to the fact that the company was "working out antitrust issues with the European Commission", he said it would turn its attention to the U.S. " in due course".

The "Ah" ring and "O" Magazine

A Libby Copeland article in the Washington Post explained that the Ah Ring received quite a bit of attention when a photo of the ring - white gold with 11 tiny diamonds - showed up in Oprah Winfrey's O magazine in March 2001.

"Sales shot from the tens to the thousands."

The A in the name of the "Ah" Ring symbolizes "Available", the H is for "Happy".

"Don't wait around for a guy to buy you a diamond ring," says the designer of the ring, former free-lance writer Ruta Fox. She told women, "If you want diamonds, why not just buy them?"

There are approximately 43 million single women in the United States, and women purchasing jewelry for themselves is one of the fastest growing segments in the jewelry industry. The Jewelry Information Center in New York City states that from 1998 to 1999 the self-purchase market for diamond jewelry increased 41%.

Laser Engraving on Diamonds

The Paris jeweler, Frédéric Boucheron, could be credited as the first jeweler to "brand" diamonds. In the mid-19th century, he etched royal crests on the stones; however, the practice stopped when some of his clients had to sell their diamonds.

In a March 2002 National Geographic article about diamonds, "Diamonds - The Real Story", a photo of a diamond is shown with the words "NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC" laser engraved on the girdle of the stone.

The photo's caption is "Carved in Stone", and it goes on to say, "Though increasingly common, such branding is easily erased by a few minutes of polishing."

National Geographic - March 2002

In an article in the March issue of the National Geographic magazine, Andrew Cockburn tells the story of a large (265.82 carat) Congolese rough stone that was cut and polished by William Goldberg's firm in New York.

Actually, 4 stones were polished from the 265.82 carat piece of rough, the largest being a flawless oval that weighed in at 102.23 carats.

The photographer, Carl Wolinsky, photographed all 4 stones in the palm of the hand of William Goldberg. Saul Goldberg is photographed standing beside a model wearing a necklace with one of the other stones cut from the rough, a 22.00 carat fancy shape.

The necklace was originally shown in Cannes as part of an AMfar benefit. Named the Ashoka, it is highlighted by a pair of IF, D color Ashoka-cut diamonds, one of which is the 22.00 carat stone cut from the original 265.82 carat rough diamond.
